BECOME AN EMERGENCY VOLUNTEER
  • Resilience is strength, the ability to pull together to support each other.
  • Often, people will spontaneously help each other in emergency situations but this assistance could be improved (and be safer) with some pre-planning.
  • We are encouraging all Town and Parish Councils to get involved and develop their own Community Emergency Plan. See our Getting Started Guide here.
  • You know your community best!
  • You may be a member of a variety of communities:
    • Geographical (a street, neighbourhood, village)
    • Cultural
    • Religious
    • Social
  • You can help your community by identifying:
    • What the potential risks are for that specific community. Do you know the risks for Bedfordshire? If not have a look here.
    • Who has skills, knowledge, transport or equipment that could help
    • What buildings are available and who has the keys (for example the village hall, church hall)
    • Communication links to ensure everyone is contacted in an emergency
    • Who could be vulnerable in an emergency
    • What the highest priority needs are to respond to, and recover from the emergency
  • It has been proven that communities that are prepared to deal with an emergency also respond more effectively to it, are less affected by it, and recover more quickly from it.
  • Working together to plan for emergencies can also help strengthen a community.
  • You could also consider linking up with surrounding communities and agreeing to help each other out as and when needed.
